Just for curiosity's sake.

I came back to visit last July after being away for five years. Funny this topic should come up, as I'm slated to make another visit this Friday.

I haven't been back in years. I'd love the chance to go back, though. I sort of miss the damn place.
Sort of.

I'm unclear as to your meaning, sir. Is that a good thing?

Of course it is. Which is why I thought it was a safe bet to assume everyone knew what I was talking about. C'mon, man, if you can't get nostalgic on a high school alumni message board, where can you?

I am arriving in Des Moines on Wednesday, July 20th for a few weeks vacation. Haven't been back to the hometown in a while. Really looking forward to it!

I was back a few weeks ago (and ran into Brian Gongol at Hy-Vee.) There are some changes in town-- some new streets and things-- but all in all, that place does not change.

all in all, that place does not change. Says a woman living in Europe...where the pace of change is glacial, at best. Actually, for those who didn't know, Dallas County (where, in fact, I now live...even though I'm still in WDM) is one of the ten fastest-growing counties in the US. So in the interest of fair and accurate reporting, things are actually changing here faster than anywhere but maybe 9 other places in the entire country.

I would say that in the grand scheme of things, it can be argued that not much has changed in terms of the actual vibe of the town, but from a cosmetic standpoint, it looked like there had been a fair amount of development. Of course, I saw a lot more of the things this year that I did not see last year, such as Jordan Creek, etc. I've only been back twice in the last six years, so I was still a little taken aback by some of the businesses that have changed or left by now. Then again, certain other things seem like they are frozen in time, such as the Tavern in Valley Junction, and the Friedrich's Coffee on 86th(?).
I, unfortunately, did not have the good fortune of running into Mr. Gongol at the supermarket.
We'll work on that next year, right?

Basically Alexx9811 summed up my point better than I did. There are new buildings, businesses, roads, etc-- but the feel and vibe of the place doesn't seem to have changed.
I've read that stat on Dallas County-- and I see the new housing going up. Where are these people coming from? Is it people moving back to the area? Moving house within the area? It doesn't make sense when you look at the numbers and hear about the "brain drain" of the young and educated leaving the state. (Which I read about in the Register every time I come back for a visit.)
And as for the glacial pace of change in Europe-- I know a thing or two about that! :-)
